Frequently asked questions

Of course there are many questions to be asked about the Matrix implants, the process of decellularisation, the operation itself and the time following the operation. We have collected some of the most frequent asked questions for you. For more individual questions please  contact your doctor or clinic.

General questions

What is decellularization?

Human and animal tissue consist of a support structure (primarily collagen and elastin) and cells. The supporting tissue structure, guaranteeing the stability, is evolutionarily well preserved and varies only slightly between humans and animals. In contrast, human and animal cells differ considerably. Therefore, only the cells will be removed during the decellularization process while the supporting tissue structure remains unaffected.

Will there be a rejection of decellularized tissue?

As all animal cells will be removed, the Auto Tissue product does not cause any rejection and no immunosuppressants are necessary.

Does the decellularized tissue calcify?

The process of decellularization differs substantially from other treatment methods of animal tissue (e.g. the use of glutaraldehyde) for human implantation. Therefore, the implants do not show the usual calcification or shrinking.

Is the administration of blood thinner necessary?

The administration of blood thinner is only necessary during the first three to six months after the operation.

Questions about Matrix P™ plus N

Is the Matrix P plus N suitable for everyone?

The Matrix P plus N is suitable for every patient with a corresponding indication – independent of gender or age – from neonatal to adults.

What are the indications for the Matrix P plus N

The Matrix P plus N is used in the case of congenital or acquired disease of the pulmonary heart valve.

Can the Matrix P plus N be used when the aortic heart valve is affected?

Indirectly. In the case of a Ross procedure, where the aortic valve is replaced by the patients pulmonary heart valve the Matrix P plus N can be used to replace it.

Do I have to consider frequent re-operations?

No. Even though re-operations can never be excluded completely, the probability is marginal. The principle of decellularization does not lead to calcification and rejection of the tissue. Furthermore the Matrix P plus N shows remodelling and growth-potential. Therefore functional- or growth-related re-operations will be significant lower than with conventional heart valves.

How long will the recovery take place?

Open heart surgery is a severe intervention, however compared to minimal invasive interventions, the patients recover very fast and in most of the cases are able to manage their daily routine earlier. Longer rehabilitee periods are rather seldom.

Do I have to be take life-long medication?

No. After implantation of a Matrix P plus N heart valve there is no need for specific blood-thinner or any kind of immunosuppressive drugs.

Do I have to consider any further constraints?

The operation will definitively be an enormous benefit for your quality of life. Daily routine will be a lot easier than before and in some cases even sport will be possible again. However, in all cases please check with your doctor before.

Will the health care system cover the costs for the Matrix P plus N?
